October Curriculum
At St. Peter Academy we follow the Common Core standards and the standards laid out by the state of Massachusetts. As the teacher, I take these standards and turn them into meaningful and engaging lessons to help my students grow. Below is a small overview of what we are working on this month.
English language Arts
This month we are focusing on the power of reading. We are practicing close reading skills and metacognition. Students are reading text critically, and writing about the meaning of stories using evidence from the text. Our class book is Charlotte's Web, and we are making connections and drawing inferences as we read. We are also working to identify the structural elements of poems and to improve our collaborative discussion skills.
Writer's Workshop
In writer's workshop, we are linking writing daily about motivational moments, as we gear up for longer prose and our autobiography unit.. Emphasis on clear, coherent writing with proper grammar and spelling is being reinforced so that students can effectively read and write their work.
Math
This month we are focusing on multiplication and division, the meaning of factors, and place value of multi digit whole numbers.
Social Studies
We are learning map skills, and about the regional geography of New England and Massachusetts. We will learn about Colonial Massachusetts with a focus on how Native Americans and English colonists created ways of living that allowed them to survive in the Massachusetts environment.
Science
We are learning the steps of the scientific method and applying them to hands on projects related to force and motion in structures and systems, as well as energy transference. We have weekly STEM activities.
