February/March: We are reading From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. Each student is also preparing an individual report on a weather topic of their choice.
December/January: We are reading Because of Winn Dixie. Each student also has a nonfiction text from the 'Who Is'/'What Is' series.
October/November: We are reading Charlotte's Web and doing close analysis of the text. Each student has also selected a "power" chapter book to read independently.

Poem of the month
For May, students are assigned to interview a friend or family member who has immigrated to the United States.
The Poem of the Month for April is about Space. Students have three to choose from.
The Poem of the Month for March is a Concrete/Shape Poem from "Any Me I Want To Be", by Karla Kuskin.
February's poem is "Dreams" by Langston Hughes
Students have two poems to choose from for January : "The Eagle" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson and "Flint" by Christina Rossetti. Both rely heavily on metaphors and similes.
December's Poem is "Why Nobody Pets the Lion at the Zoo" by John Ciardi.
November's Poem of The Month is "Fall" by Kaila Kushkin.
October's Poem of the month is "Picking Berries".
September's poem of the month is the school pledge. Students should memorize it if they haven't yet. We are reading and studying other poems in class, including "The Red Wheelbarrow", by William Carlos Williams.
