Students celebrated their love of reading on Dr. Seuss’s birthday by writing their own Dr. Seuss style story to share with the K2 class. First, we analyzed the text features of a few Dr. Seuss tales. We identified his use of colors, wacky characters, and rhymes, and decided which books had deep morals embedded in their fun language. Next we tried to write our own silly rhymes, and then moved on to writing a rhyme with a message. The theme of our story was ‘How To Use Scissors Properly’. Students did an amazing job creating a character and conflict, sequencing their plot, and writing a story in rhyme that delivered the intended lesson. They were so absorbed in the task, they actually worked right through snack time without realizing it! Students edited their writing to find the perfect rhymes and meter for their ideas, illustrated their story, and then split into groups to perform for the K2 Class! After reading to the Kindergartner's, students asked the audience to discuss the meaning of the story, and to find the rhymes. The best part, was when we were back upstairs, and students asked me, “Are we going to do any work today?” It’s wonderful when the learning process feels so organic that they don’t even realize the huge educational strides they are making. I believe that’s exactly how Dr. Seuss intended it to be.
How To Use Scissors Properly
I saw something from the corner of my eye.
What was it? It was a little fly.
No problem there, I did not care,
until it stuck in my hair.
Blue hair is long, it’s in my eyes.
Do I hold scissors from this side?
No, No, No, that’s not safe.
You have to hold them good and straight.
Don’t poke your skin, you must take care.
Don’t throw the scissors in the air.
Did you know scissors hurt when not used right?
So you better hold them really tight.
My hair is long, it’s in my eye.
It’s hard to see, I want to cry.
I want a style to make me cool.
Someone tell me the scissors rule.
I need to cut. Please understand,
but nothing sharp is in my hand.
I’ll use them safely, I won’t attack.
I really want my scissors back.
