Students have been busy crafting narrative texts about real or imagined experiences or events, and we have also started a poetry unit in Writer's Workshop. Please feel free to check out their portfolio of writing in the classroom, as well as their latest Bio Poems on display on the hallway bulletin board.
In science we have been studying the solar system. Students have done independent research on the planets, as well as hands on projects showing the relative distance of planets from the sun, and the phases of the moon. They also used movement to show rotation and revolution of the earth and moon around the sun, (they got dizzy!)
Our field trip to the Copley Library was a lovely afternoon. Students all found new books to read and bring back to school, and we had a nice lunch in the scenic courtyard.
We took our final Skype field trip of the year to visit a teaching farm in Kenya. Students were able to connect this trip to earlier studies about the water cycle, water conservation, sustainable community development, and Kenya's Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Wangari Maathai. Students compared and contrasted our city landscape with the farm environment of our host, and discussed a bit about Swahili versus English.
Math is moving along as we are full into a geometry unit. Students are proficient with protractor use, and are working to understand the traits of various polygons.
In drama, students are preparing for the end of the year show at Lawn On D. They have been practicing piano, and are enjoying learning some of their favorite songs. This has been a great study of rhythm, cooperation, and melody, as well as an introduction to the piano.
